It’s been interesting watching the infographic boom of the last several years. Even though data visualizations have been used mostly to represent statistics and research, now you can find them, especially infographics, in all shapes and forms all over the web. The rise in their use is not a surprise. After all, 40% of people will respond better to visual information than plain text.

The power of data visualizations lies in the fact that they can show complex data quickly, and present insights that you wouldn’t have seen by looking at numbers alone.

Let’s look at this interactive map about the Economic Stress Index. The Index combines unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcy data in the United States. Looking at the vast amount of data alone would make it difficult for us to come to the conclusion that some counties in California, Nevada and Arizona were affected the most.

By visualizing it you create this fantastic combination that will push your message across more effectively. Infographics are a great tool for brand awareness. Their potential for social shares is typically high. But other forms of data visualizations can also be used in different mediums.

visual statisticsWhite papers, for example, which are considered boring by some, can become a powerful marketing tool. Since a white paper’s objective is to persuade potential customers to learn about or purchase your product or service, why not make it visually appealing and easy to understand, instead of just presenting a bunch of data? Studies show that people remember about 80% of what they see, compared to 30% of what they read.

Focus on informing and teaching your audience. Taking a visual direction will add great value and help convert potential costumers.
